The Perfect 3-Day Chengdu Itinerary for First-Time Visitors (2026)
Thanks to the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, Chengdu has become a top destination for international travelers. But with so much to see—from giant pandas to ancient temples—how many days do you actually need?
As a local guide, I always tell my guests that three full days is the perfect sweet spot. It gives you enough time to see the world-class highlights without feeling rushed, and just enough time to experience Chengdu’s famous "slow life." Here is my ultimate, trap-free 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors.
Day 1: Giant Pandas and the Pace of Local Life

Morning: Start your day early! Aim to arrive at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding by 7:30 AM. Pandas are most active in the cool morning air, eating breakfast and playing. By 10:00 AM, the massive tour groups arrive and the pandas go to sleep, so early arrival is your secret weapon.
Afternoon: Head back to the city center to visit People's Park (Renmin Park). This is where you see real Chengdu life. Sit at a traditional outdoor teahouse, order a cup of jasmine tea, and watch locals playing Mahjong and practicing Tai Chi.
Evening: Walk through the Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alleys). While it is a bit commercialized, the Qing Dynasty architecture is beautifully lit at night. Skip the expensive restaurants here and grab some street food nearby.
Day 2: The Leshan Giant Buddha Day Trip

Morning: Take a day trip out of the city to see the Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest stone Buddha statue in the world, carved into a cliff face over 1,200 years ago. Instead of hiking down the crowded, steep stairs for hours, I highly recommend taking the 40-minute sightseeing boat tour. It provides the only full panoramic view of the statue and saves your energy.
Afternoon: Do not rush back to Chengdu! Leshan is famous among locals as the ultimate food city. Spend the afternoon exploring the hidden backstreets to try Sweet Skin Duck (Tianpi Ya) and Qiaojiao Beef.
Evening: Return to your hotel in Chengdu to rest. If you still have energy, taking a night stroll along the Jinjiang River near the Anshun Bridge is highly recommended.
Day 3: History, Silk, and Authentic Hotpot

Morning: Visit the Wuhou Shrine to dive into the history of the Three Kingdoms period, followed by a walk next door to Jinli Ancient Street.
Afternoon: Visit the Chengdu Brocade and Embroidery Museum. Sichuan silk has a history of over 2,000 years and was a major export on the ancient Silk Road. It is a quiet, fascinating stop away from the crowds.
Evening: You cannot leave Chengdu without trying authentic Sichuan Hotpot! To protect your stomach, remember the local rule: always order the "Yin-Yang" pot (half spicy, half mild mushroom or bone broth) and dip your meat in the classic garlic and sesame oil sauce.
