Getting Around Chengdu: How to Use Didi and the Metro Like a Local (2026)
Worried about getting lost in China? This updated 2026 local guide explains how foreigners can easily navigate Chengdu using Didi, the metro system, and private rides.

Getting Around Chengdu: How to Use Didi and the Metro Like a Local (2026)
Navigating a massive metropolis with over 20 million people can be intimidating, especially when you do not speak the local language. Many foreign travelers worry about getting scammed by fake taxis or getting hopelessly lost in the subway.
The good news is that Chengdu has one of the most modern, clean, and foreigner-friendly transportation systems in the world. As a local guide, I always make sure my guests know how to get around safely. Here is your practical 2026 guide to using Didi (the Chinese Uber), the metro, and avoiding common transportation traps.
Didi Chuxing: The "Chinese Uber" You Must Have
Forget about Uber or Lyft; they do not work here. In China, Didi is the undisputed king of ride-hailing. It is safe, transparent, and completely eliminates the language barrier.

How to use Didi as a foreigner: The easiest way is to use the Didi mini-program inside the Alipay app (which you should already have set up for payments).

Open Alipay and search for "Didi".
The interface is entirely in English. You can type your destination in English, and the app will automatically translate it for the driver.
The Best Feature: If the driver sends you a text message (e.g., "I am here" or "Walk to the corner"), the app automatically translates their Chinese text into English, and your English replies back into Chinese.
The fare is automatically deducted from your Alipay account at the end of the ride. No cash, no haggling, no stress.
The Chengdu Metro: Fast, Cheap, and English-Friendly
Chengdu’s subway system is incredibly efficient and spotless. If you are traveling during rush hour (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM or 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM), the metro is often much faster than taking a car.

How to ride the Metro: You do not need to wait in line to buy a physical ticket. Open your Alipay app, tap on "Transport," and generate a Chengdu Metro QR code. Simply scan this code at the turnstile when you enter and again when you exit. The fare (usually between 2 to 7 RMB) will be automatically calculated and deducted.
Do not worry about getting lost. Every single sign, ticket machine, and station announcement is in both Chinese and clear English.

The Challenge with Regular Street Taxis
While you can still hail traditional taxis on the street, I generally do not recommend it for non-Chinese speakers. Most drivers do not speak English, and showing them an English map often leads to confusion. Furthermore, many taxi drivers no longer carry cash change, expecting you to pay via WeChat or Alipay QR codes anyway. Stick to Didi for point-to-point travel.
