How to Visit the Leshan Giant Buddha: Boat Tour vs. Hiking (2026)

After seeing the giant pandas, the Leshan Giant Buddha is undoubtedly the second most popular day trip from Chengdu. Carved directly into a red sandstone cliff face over 1,200 years ago, it is the largest stone Buddha statue in the world.

However, getting there and deciding how to see it can be highly confusing for foreign travelers. You basically have two choices: taking a sightseeing boat or hiking through the scenic area. As a local guide who frequently takes guests to Leshan, I have seen many travelers ruin their day by choosing the wrong option for their fitness level. Here is my honest 2026 guide to help you decide.

The Hiking Route: Up Close but Physically Demanding

If you choose to enter the park on foot, you will hike up the mountain to the Buddha's head, and then descend a narrow, incredibly steep staircase carved into the cliff side (known as the Nine Turns) to reach its feet.

  • The Pros: You get to experience the sheer scale of the statue up close. You can admire the intricate drainage system carved into its hair, visit the surrounding Lingyun Temple, and take a photo standing right next to its massive toes.

  • The Cons (The Reality Check): The staircase is extremely narrow, fitting only one person at a time. During peak seasons or weekends, you might wait in line for 2 to 3 hours just to walk down these stairs. In the humid summer heat, this can be exhausting and is not recommended for young children or elderly travelers.

The Boat Tour: The Best Panoramic View (Local's Choice)

Instead of entering the main park, you can buy a ticket for a sightseeing ferry that departs from the local pier. The boat sails out to the middle of the river confluence, directly in front of the Buddha, and pauses for about 10-15 minutes so everyone can take photos on the deck.

  • The Pros: This is the only way to see the entire Buddha from head to toe in one magnificent panoramic view. The whole boat trip takes about 40 minutes, requires zero hiking, and completely skips the massive crowds on the mountain.

  • The Cons: You cannot get off the boat to touch the statue or explore the temples on the mountain.

The Hidden Secret of Leshan: The Local Food

Authentic Leshan local food and street snacks recommended for foreign travelers.

Most foreign tourists do not know this, but for Chengdu locals, Leshan is actually a food paradise! If you only go to see the Buddha and head straight back, you are missing half the experience. Leshan is famous for its Sweet Skin Duck (Tianpi Ya), Qiaojiao Beef, and Bobo Ji (skewer hotpot).
