Pandas & the Bronze Mysteries Chengdu Panda Base · Sanxingdui Museum
The world's most beloved animal in the morning. The world's most mysterious ancient civilisation in the afternoon. Two completely different worlds. One unforgettable day.

[Introduction] This tour pairs two of Sichuan's most extraordinary experiences into a single day — one about life and nature, one about history and unanswered questions. In the morning, you walk through bamboo groves at the world's most important giant panda conservation centre, close enough to watch them eat, climb, and sleep with nothing between you and them. In the afternoon, you step inside Sanxingdui Museum — where bronze masks with eyes that protrude 16 centimetres, golden sceptres, and a 3.96-metre bronze tree covered in mythical birds have left archaeologists around the world with one persistent question: who made these, where did they come from, and where did they go? Nobody knows. You can see the objects themselves, and decide what you think. Your English-speaking guide is with you from hotel pickup to hotel drop-off. Lunch and dinner included. Every ticket handled.

[Itinerary]
Morning · Hotel Pickup Your guide and driver arrive at your hotel lobby at 07:30. No metro, no map, no confusion. The day begins immediately.
Morning · Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding Arrive at the panda base at approximately 08:00 — early enough to beat the crowds and catch the pandas at their most active. Your guide leads you through the bamboo-lined paths to the areas where the pandas gather: the adult enclosures, the sub-adult zone, and — depending on the season — the nursery where cubs are raised under careful supervision. Your guide explains the breeding programme, the pandas' extraordinary dietary habits, their conservation history, and the decades of scientific work that pulled the species back from the edge of extinction. Approximately 2 hours inside the base.

Late Morning · Drive to Sanxingdui Depart the panda base at 10:30 for the one-hour drive to Guanghan. Your guide uses the journey to set the scene: in 1986, two sacrificial pits were discovered in a field outside Guanghan, containing thousands of bronze and gold objects unlike anything ever found in China before or since. The discovery rewrote the map of Chinese civilisation. Since 2020, new excavations have continued to unearth objects that nobody has yet been able to explain. By the time you arrive at the museum, the mystery already has you.
Midday · Lunch in Guanghan Arrive in Guanghan at approximately 11:30. Lunch at a local neighbourhood restaurant before entering the museum — simple, authentic, the kind of place locals eat every day. Spice level adjusted in advance, fully mild available on request.
Afternoon · Sanxingdui Museum Enter the museum at 12:30. This is one of the most startling museum experiences in China — and one of the most startling in the world. Your guide takes you through the key objects, one by one, with the full story behind each:

— The Bronze Sacred Tree: standing 3.96 metres tall, its branches populated with mythical birds and divine figures. Nothing like it exists anywhere else in the ancient world. Nobody knows what it represents.
— The Bronze Protruding-Eye Mask: eyes pushed 16 centimetres forward from the face, an expression simultaneously serene and deeply unsettling. The defining image of Sanxingdui — and the object that made the world stop and pay attention when it was first unearthed.

— The Gold Sceptre and Gold Face Mask: 3,000-year-old goldwork of a precision that humbles modern craftsmen. The gold face mask in particular — placed over a bronze head — suggests a ritual practice with no parallel in Chinese history.
— The New Excavation Galleries: objects unearthed after 2020 are still being restored and studied. Some have only recently gone on display. Your guide explains what archaeologists currently believe — and where the debate stands today.
The Sanxingdui civilisation left no written language. No graves. No explanation for where it came from or where it went. What it left behind is in this building. Approximately 2.5 hours inside the museum.
Late Afternoon · Drive Back to Chengdu Depart Guanghan at 15:30 for the one-hour return drive to Chengdu.

Evening · Dinner Back in Chengdu, your guide takes you to a local Sichuan restaurant for dinner — the perfect ending to a long and extraordinary day. Cold beer, warm food, no agenda.
End of Tour · Hotel Drop-Off Your driver returns you to your hotel. Your guide says goodbye and hands you a personal list of recommendations for your remaining days in Chengdu.
